Mr. Greenbacker is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Marshall-Wythe School of Law, College of William and Mary.

He is admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia, and all of the state and federal courts of Virginia. He is admitted to practice before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Claims, the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.

Experience

  • served over 20 years as a prosecutor in Virginia, including 16 years as Commonwealth's Attorney for Halifax County;
  • has served as a special assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of Virginia;
  • has argued and won cases in the Virginia Supreme Court, the Virginia Court of Appeals, the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia and the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The thousands of trials he has conducted as a prosecutor include:

  • two capital murder cases in which the death penalty was imposed and carried out;
  • complex securities fraud, OSHA violation, environmental crime, and embezzlement cases;
  • complex drug conspiracy and bank fraud cases in U.S. District Court.

Mr. Greenbacker has defended persons accused of most of the offenses set forth in the Code of Virginia.

Of note are a capital murder case in which the defendant was convicted of only a single misdemeanor after three trials of his case conducted in separate counties because of venue changes. The defendant's initial conviction was overturned on appeal, his first retrial conviction was set aside because of jury and police improprieties, and his misdemeanor conviction was the result of the third trial. In another first degree murder case his client was convicted of only a single misdemeanor. This trial was featured in an hour long television documentary which was nationally broadcasted on numerous occasions on WE, the Women's Entertainment Network. In both of these murder cases the defendant was released at the end of the proceedings.

His civil trial experience includes cases of :

  • personal injury;
  • contract enforcement;
  • interpretation and enforcement of wills;
  • fraudulent transactions of all sorts;
  • divorce and child custody;
  • injunctions, nuisances;
  • warranty claims;
  • protective orders;
  • and rights restoration.

Civic Involvement

In addition to his public service, Mr. Greenbacker is Past President of the Halifax County Bar Association and the YMCA of South Boston/Halifax County. He is a former Director of the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys.
